From 15 to 18 June 2026, BRGM researcher Ivan Osorio-Leon, PhD, visited Tashkent. From 16 to 18 June he ran a seminar and training course for staff of the Institute of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology (HYDROENGEO), with lectures and practical sessions.
The programme covered the importance of groundwater in the 21st century, priority directions in modern hydrogeology, the science of the “critical zone”, building a national knowledge system, and the future of Uzbekistan’s water resources.
The cooperation goes back further: from 31 March to 2 May 2025, institute specialist J. M. Melibayev trained at BRGM in Montpellier in groundwater modelling, under a Campus France grant.
Why it matters
Geothermal water is groundwater. The same institute holds much of Uzbekistan’s data on thermal waters, and three months later it hosted BRGM to discuss the deep geothermal potential of the Fergana Valley.
