Geophysical surveys in the Gulistan area of the Gissar region found two zones of unusually high heat flow. In a paper published on 11 September 2025, I. P. Sidorova, R. I. Saxobidinov and E. A. Golovko describe potential reservoirs at 2.5–3.5 km depth.

The study proposes binary-cycle power units, which pass moderately hot water through a heat exchanger to boil a working fluid with a low boiling point. Built in 50 MW stages, they would reach 100 MW of stable baseload generation.

The geophysical work was supported by MUNIS, the World Bank-backed project for Modernizing Uzbekistan’s National Innovation System. Gravity, magnetotelluric and seismic surveys fed 3D models of the area.

Read it carefully

This is a research proposal, not an approved project. Exploration drilling would be the next step to confirm the reservoir.
