In May 2025, Uzenergoinspeksiya reported the first geothermal heat pump installation in Khorezm region, at family polyclinic No. 27 in Urganch district.

The heat pump works together with a solar collector, 25 kW of solar panels and a 64 kW battery system that keeps the clinic powered without interruption. The building no longer burns gas for heating, saving about 10,000 cubic metres a year. Surplus solar electricity sold to the grid can bring in up to 100 million soums a year.

The Uzbekistan Recovery and Development Fund initiated the project with Uzenergoinspeksiya, the Korea Energy Agency and the Climate Change Institute, funded by a grant from the Government of Korea. The battery system gives used electric-vehicle batteries a second life.

Why it matters

Ground-source heat pumps don’t need hot water from deep wells. They draw on the steady temperature of the shallow ground, so they can work almost anywhere in the country, in clinics, schools and homes that heat with gas today.
