On 13 September 2025, Uzbekgeofizika met the Uzbekistan Recovery and Development Fund, the National Energy Efficiency Agency and Teploenergoproyekt at its head office to launch a new line of work: studying underground geothermal water and using it for energy.

The meeting discussed the importance of this work and its opportunities and prospects in Uzbekistan, and set specific first steps for well No. 1 in Kokand, Fergana region.

A feasibility study

By October, work had begun on the feasibility study for a pilot project using geothermal energy from water in deep wells. On 15 October 2025, an on-site discussion at the company’s Fergana Geophysical Expedition brought together the Recovery and Development Fund, the National Energy Efficiency Agency, Hungary’s Geomax, Teploenergoproyekt, O‘zbekgidrogeologiya, the Institute of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology and the Kokand city administration to talk through near-term and long-term work.

Why it matters

Using water from deep wells that already exist avoids the biggest cost of a geothermal project: drilling. The same expedition hosted BRGM and University of Geological Sciences geologists in September 2026 to study the wider Fergana Valley.
